About Katherine Kindig
I have been involved in art most of my life. Either learning about art, teaching art or doing art. I have a Masters of Art from San Jose State University. I work, live and play in San Jose California.
The best thing about making art is the surprise at the end. It can be like a problem you are trying to solve, a puzzle. Great moments are when I surprise myself with a color, shape or feel that seemed like it just wasn’t going to work, at the very end turns out great. Sometimes my best surprises start out as my biggest mistakes or out of a painting I have left behind only to work on months later.
My works are not large due to my studio space, and my work is somewhat abstract, although you can normally tell what the subject is. I am working with the color, shape and feel of the subject, not that the subject looks exactly like it should. My work needs to leave something for the viewer and myself to bring to the piece each time it is viewed.
I paint landscapes, nature, such as bugs and still lives. My landscapes come from photos I have taken in my travels. I like to keep things simple so that once again, the user can also bring something to the art. I enjoy the sense of mystery a painting can have or the of-the-wall feel I can get from my work. Sometimes there is just a since of humor.
Most of my work is under 16” by 20” in size. I frame my paintings as I call them, in simple natural or black frames with mats that have larger-than-average boarders. To me this is all part of the art.
